DREAMS TOUCHED UPON DESIGN
İHİB, the most important heir of the Turkish carpet and rug industry, takes one step further by taking over the ancient culture of Anatolia, the motherland of weaving. IHİB has made every effort to help design and designer be absorbed and internalized by the whole society and in this scope, carried out the 9th of the Carpet Design Competitions that it performs every year in the Tophane-i Amire Culture and Art Center, one of the historical places of Istanbul. All İHİB Board Members, İHİB Chairman Uğur Uysal, İHKİB Chairman Hikmet Tanrıverdi, İDMİB Chairman Mustafa Şenocak, TETSİAD Chairman Yaşar Küçükçalık, GAHİB Chairman Salahattin Kaplan, Association directors, industry leaders and designers and their families joined in the event held on 16 November. Under the İHİB Purchasing Mission Program, the representatives of the world’s largest carpet importer companies and organizations who came from the USA, Brazil and Japan to Istanbul were also among the guests of the event. The jury of the organization which was especially a successful example of academia and sector cooperation was made up of academicians who are experts in their fields as well as the leading names of the sector.
ORIGINAL DESIGNS INNOVATIVE IDEAS
The criteria such as the originality of designs, the inclusion of new ideas, the choice of materials and the harmony of material design, the designs being convertible to carpets, the designs being available to the end users were prioritized in the event where the designs of the finalist 8 designers were exhibited. The 4th grade student Erman Aksoy from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Department of Traditional Turkish Arts, Carpet, Rug and Old Fabric Designs became the winner of the 9th Design Competition with his study inspired by the reefs forming the underwater world. The 4th grade student Uğur Cihan Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Traditional Turkish Arts, Carpet Rug and Old Fabric Designs came in second with the theme of ‘Colors’ in the competition, while the 4th grade student Özgecan Bülbül from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Department of Traditional Turkish Arts, Carpet, Rug and Old Fabric Patterns came as third as with her theme ‘Magma’ which mentions the volcanic eruption, the most magnificent natural disaster of the earth. İHİB Chairman Uysal who made the opening speech expressed that the Carpet Design Contest organized by İHİB was the product of a long work. Mr. Uysal who stated that the project brought the efforts of the academy, industry and local designers together 11 years ago said, “We have taken strength from our dreams, and have overcome the obstacles created by those who put a spanner in our work one by one. There were some who said design was not the business of carpenters and there were some who did their best to avoid a contact to be established with the academy so as not to transfer our design power into the future by monopolizing the designers. We did not give up as İHİB and my colleagues and me knew that design would knock our door eventually from the very first day”. Underlining that they realized as a team that it would not be enough to have only the investments made in the last 11 years, the world’s largest machinery carpet capacity and such a wonderful brand, the Turkish carpet brand, and experience the culture of this work in Anatolia in the changing global business, Mr. Uysal stated that they saw that they would lose their grasp on the Turkish carpet brand without the added value created by the influence of design and designer.
The Carpet Design Contest we organize as IHİB is the product of a long work. We initiated our project by bringing the efforts of the academy, industry and local designer together. These achievements were a dream 15 years ago. We have taken strength from our dreams and knew that design would knock our door eventually from the very first day. We realized as a team that it would not be enough to have only the investments made in the last 11 years, the world’s largest machinery carpet capacity and such a wonderful brand, the Turkish carpet brand, and experience the culture of this work in Anatolia in the changing global business. For this reason, this project which we laid out 11 years ago has come to this day with the endless support of our academia, especially our universities and colleagues. We have discovered many designers thanks to our design competitions as İHİB. As we set off, we came up with a very conservative idea of “discovering, cultivating and supporting 10 international designers in 10 years” but today this number has reached 20’s and 30’s. Carpet Design Contest is a competition embracing not only designers, but also the carpet industry. Thanks to this contest, we have proven that we are unity and in solidarity. We are reaping the fruits of our work as İHİB. But this is not just our efforts. For this reason, I wish that our people and all of us do their best to increase the competitions and to give importance to designers and designers.
